Research Abstract

Joining the "School Around The World" Project lead by American Council of Basic Education. We visited the schools in the participated countries where we observed many lessons and collected the records of teaching/learning activities. We chose the schools in Wisconsin, U.S.A., London, Besancion, France, Hamburg, Germany as well as Hong Kong. We asked the teachers to make the video, lesson plans and student works of one unit of science and social studies. We analyzed them according to the following framework : (1) teaching/learning environment, (a) space-open to closed (b) material-teaching to learning (c) class size-learning to small, (2) teaching/learning mode, (a) teaching staff-teacher to volunteer (b) function of teacher-instructor to facilitator (c) mode of teaching/learning-whole class teaching to individualized learning, (3) teaching/learning activities, (a) unit of analysis-one lesson to one unit (b) program-subject to integrated study (c) mode of leaning-drill work to problem solving learning.
We found the possibility to establish international comparative study of lessons. The teaching/learning activities has been changed recently very much, but yet there is a lot of commonality. Teachers in every country try to set up the student's motivation or desire to the task and to push the student's pursuit of the task and to let the student conclude the task. They use certain techniques to the each step of learning. Along this line there are some uniqueness, namely differences, which is reflected by the historical and social values on teaching at school.
