Research Abstract |
To evaluate a cause of longevity epidemiological and medical investigations including analysis of gene are continued from 1997 in Xinjian, north west of China as a joint study with Xinjian Medical University. The subjects to invesigation are Uighur people from 65 years old to 70 years (Uighur old people in Hotan, UOHo) and Uighur people equal to or more than 90 years old (Uighur longevity people in Hotan, ULHo). Hotan region such subjects live in is south part of Xinjian. In the same area Han people aged 65-70 years old (Han old people in Hotan, HOHo) are also investigated. In Balikun region, north part of Xinjian, Kazakh people aged 65-70 years old (Kazakh old people in Balikun, KOBa) and Han people aged 65-70 years old (HOBa) are also invesigated. The above 3 races still keep their original life styles which are thought with an difference in the prevalence of several diseases. Ho. Urinary sodium excretion and serum creatinine were high in KOBa and HOBa. High salt intake induced high blood pressure (as observed in HOBa and KOBa) and, which was reducible by high potassium intake due to much fruits and vegetable intake (as observed in HOBa). Serum Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (Cu/Zn-SOD) was significantly high in ULHo(the low sodium excretion group) and significantly low in HOBa (the high sodium excretion group). Excess serum Cu/Zn-SOD in longevity (ULHo) suggests a role for this enzyme in longevity. Left ventricular mass (LVM) determined by echocardiography was lowest in KOBa although their blood pressure was highest. LVM was higher in ULHo even if their blood pressure was low suggesting that LVM is not related to blood pessure in the present investigation. The values of serum total cholesterol and triglyceride were lowest in KOBa whose carotid artery thickness was greater than that of othe groups. This was a result to be different from expectation. There was not difference in vascular age between UOHo and ULHo meaning that vasclar tone in ULHo was still relatively young. Holter ECG showed that parasympathetic nervous function in ULHo was similar to that in UOHo and was lower than that in HOBa and KOBa. I/D polymorphism of the angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) gene was determined. The overall distributions of alleles in these three groups did not differ. within the Uighur group, frequency of the D allele was significantly higher in the ULHo group than in the UOHo group. Additionally, follow-up surveys are also should be continued.
