Research Abstract |
The results are summarized as follows ; 1. In order to verify the physico-chemical nature of Subtropical 'Deep sea Water' which is pumped up by Okinawa Prefecture Institution, Ocean Expedition of Nagasaki-maru was successfully carried out from Sep.23 to Oct.2, 2001. 2. Subtropical 'Deep Sea Water' is collected from intermediated depth of ca.600m off from Kume-jima Island. It is clear that salinity of its depth water is minimal in the Pacific Ocean, which is formed by the contribution of North Pacific Intermediated Water, however deny in East China Sea. Exchange of Deep sea water between East China Sea and Pacific Ocean is limited only available through Kerama Gap. 3. Vertical distribution of nutrients such as silica, NO3-N and PO4-P also show different between the two sides. Estimation of contamination of anthropogenic carbon in the water column shows that it has arrived at up to 1000m depth. 4. Hazardous species such as organic-tin and PCBs are detected even in deep sea water, however they are very less compared to coastal sea waters. 5. Effect of deep sea water on physiology of sea urchin and inorganic crystallization of CaCO3 were also studied.
