Research Abstract

Significant results are summarized below :
1 Batch study I-production of acetic acid
Partial wet oxidation experiments of rice hulls and straw were performed over a wide range of conditions such as temperature varying from 300 to 400℃, reaction time from 1 to 2 min and H_20_2 supply from 50 to 110%, to obtain a high concentration acetic acid. Results show that a high acetic acid concentration can be obtained by controlling oxidation conditions, and the highest acetic acid yield, 12% on TOC/TOC basis, was obtained under the condition of 300℃, 1 min and H_20_2 supply of 70%.
2 Batch study II-production of calcium/magnesium acetate
Acetic acid produced by the wet oxidation of rice hulls/ straw can be easily converted to calcium/magnesium acetate by mixing with oyster shells/industrial Mg wastes. The conversion efficiency of acetic acid to calcium/magnesium acetate achieved >99% within 10 minutes.
3 Batch study III-promotion of acetic acid yield
A new two-step reaction process, with the first step reaction for dehydration of monosaccharides, produced from polysaccharides by hydration, to form 5-hydroxymethyl furfural (5HMF) and 2-furaldehyde (2FA), and with the second step reaction for oxidizing 5HMF and 2FA to acetic acid, was developed. Acetic acid yield obtained by the two-step reaction process is twice higher than that by a usual wet oxidation (the method used in batch study II).
4 Continuous-flow study
The continuous-flow production system was set up and adjusted, and it has been operated at a stable state for a sufficiently long time. Operating condition for producing high acetic acid yield was obtained. Acetic acid yield obtained under the condition is almost the same as that in the batch study II.
