Research Abstract |
Since reactive oxygen species (ROS) are contributed to pathogenesis of various diseases antioxidants which can scavenge ROS are expected to prevent ROS-related disorders. In the present study antioxidant action of selected Okinawan medicinal herbs which have been used as folk medicine or edible plants was evaluated. As antioxidants, isochlorogenic acid, quercetin 3-galactoside, quercetin 3-glucoside, catechin, quercitrin and chlorogenic acid from Crassocephalum crepidioides, corilagin and chebulagic acid from Terminalia catapa, chlorogenic acid, quercetin 3-rhamnoside and quercetin 3-glucoside from Peucedanum japonicum were isolated. C.ctepidioides and Lanonium wrightii showed hepatoprotective action against carbon tetrachloride -induced liver injuries. Psidium guajava and L. wrightii as well as quercetin and gallic acid depressed ischemia/reperfusion disorders of isolated rat hearts. T. catapa and its antioxidant components showed strong bactericidal activity against various bacteria including methicillin-highly resistant S. aureus. P. japonicum and some antioxidant components also showed an inhibition of nitric oxide formation from macrophages. Thus it was suggested that these medicinal herbs with antioxidant action are beneficial for development of health promoting materials.
