Research Abstract

パイロクロア遷移金属酸化物A_2B_2O_7における幾何学的フラストレーションに基づく現象、特に残留エントロピーや量子スピン物性を明らかにし、新たな物理現象を探索する目的で研究を行った。本年度は新たに以下の成果を納め、またこれまでの研究の総括を行った。
(1)(カゴメアイス状態)Aサイトにイジング磁気異方性を持つDyを用いて、結晶構造のパイロクロア格子に由来する幾何学的フラストレーションに基づく低温物性を詳しく研究した。Dy_2Ti_2O_7の良質単結晶について、<111>結晶軸方向に印加した磁場の下では、新たな磁気フラストレーション状態が生まれることを発見し、それがカゴメ格子上のスピンのグラスとレーションによることを明らかにした(カゴメアイス状態)。磁場中比熱の測定から、その残留エントロピーの値を決定するとともに、詳しい磁場・温度相図を作成してカゴメアイスの残留エントロピー開放の過程を明らかにした。
(2)(磁気誘電率と磁歪)Dy_2Ti_2O_7のスピンアイス・カゴメアイス状態に関連する磁化過程に伴う誘電率の変化と磁歪を0.3Kの低温まで測定した。
(3)(ニオブ系パイロクロア)Bサイトに4d遷移金属ニオブを含む一連のパイロクロア酸化物の合成に成功したしそれらは4価のニオブイオンから予想されることに反して、スピン1/2に基づく磁性を示さないため、規則的な格子歪みを伴うスピンダイマーの形成あるいは、量子スピン液体状態の形成などが考えられる。今年度はこれらの系でのAサイトイオンとしてTb,Yb,Dyを用いた化合物を中心にその磁気基底状態の研究を行い、幾何学的フラストレーションの重要性を明らかにした。
(4)以上の成果をまとめたいくつかの論文を発表するとともに、三角格子やカゴメ格子上にスピンをもつ様々な化合物についても研究を進めた。
