Research Abstract

屈曲型液晶、ジキラル化合物液晶の系で多くの成果を得た。
(1)屈曲型液晶の強誘電相出現に対する偶奇効果:キラル末端鎖を持つ屈曲型が強誘電性を示すことから、末端鎖長を変化させ、相系列を研究した。その結果、鎖長変化に伴う強誘電、反強誘電性の偶奇効果を確認した。また、強誘電性を発現する分子であっても、さらに長い鎖長を持ち、反強誘電性を発現するアキラル屈曲型分子と混合すると、反強誘電性が誘起された。このことから隣接層間の末端鎖相互作用の重要性が示唆された。
(2)屈曲型液晶添加によるブルー相の発現:ブルー相は高いキラリティを有する系で、等方相とコレステリック相の間に現われる欠陥によって安定化した、3次元液晶相である。本研究ではブルー相を示さないコレステリック液晶にアキラルな屈曲型分子を添加することにより、広い温度範囲にわたってブルー相を誘起することに成功した。キラリティ、および、弾性定数の観点から誘起ブルー相の起源を議論した。
(3)ジキラル化合物におけるリエントラント相:ある種のジキラル化合物はスメクチックブルー相、キラルキュービック相、異方性を持つ3次元相など多くの3次元相を持ち興味深い。本研究ではさらに、この液晶が2つあるいは3つのスメクチックC^*相を示すことを見出した。これらは大きなチルト角を持ち、誘電応答、円二色性などに多くの特徴を有する。これらの実験結果をもとに、相の構造を議論した。
