Research Abstract

種々のセラミック材料の機能特性は、粒界原子構造に基づいて形成される粒界局在量子構造と密接に関係する。本研究では、構造用セラミックスであるアルミナやジルコニア、また、機能性セラミックであるチタン酸ストロンチウム(SrTiO3)、酸化亜鉛(ZnO)などの双結晶を作製し、粒界原子構造・電子状態と機械的・電気的特性との相関性を系統的に調べ、粒界量子構造設計に関する設計指針を構築することを目的とした。
構造材については、アルミナ双結晶において極微量のイットリウム添加により高温粒界すべりが大きく抑制されることが見出された。粒界における電子状態分析を行ったところ、添加されたイットリウムが粒界における共有結合性を向上させていることが明らかとなり、添加剤による粒界電子状態制御により高温機械的特性を調整できることを突き止めた。ジルコニアにおいては主に小角粒界において形成される粒界転位構造を調べた。その結果、安定化材として添加されているイットリウムは粒界転位へ偏析し、その結果、粒界がファセット状となることが見出された、このファセット形成は高温での粒界強度と密接に関係することが分かった。一方、電子材料においては粒界転位の組織を厳密に制御することにより特異な電気特性が発現することが見出された。これは、ある傾角において転位配列が特殊な構造をとるためであり、粒界部に形成される高い応力場により粒界近傍への陽イオン空孔の集積が顕著となるためであると考えられる。ZnOについては粒界静電ポテンシャル障壁の障壁高さが粒界に偏析したPr量に依存して変化し、偏析量が多いほど高い障壁が形成されることが明らかとなった。
