光励起STMを用いた単一原子、分子レベルでの物性研究

Research Abstract

フェムト秒領域のパルス光励起下でトンネル電流を測定することにより、時空両極限領域での物性実験の可能性を追求する試みを進めてきたが、新手法・装置の開発に成功した。基礎的な性能を測定した結果、(1)トンネル電流を検出することでSTMの空間分解能(〜0.01nm)を継承し、(2)励起パルス光の間隔を1fs程度の精度で制御することで実効的なパルス幅(現状25fs)と同程度の時間分解能を実現、(3)更に、励起パルス光間隔を変調することで探針の熱膨張によるトンネル電流変化を極限まで除去し、時間分解信号を精度良く検出することが可能なシステムであることを確認した。
既存の方法は、励起光パルスをチョッパーによりon/offする周波数、あるいはレーザーパルスの繰り返し周波数、のいずれかに同期して位相敏感検出を行うことで2パルス光(時間差t_d)照射時の電流値I_t(t_d)と励起光off時の電流値I_dの差I_<dtff>=I_t(t_d)-I_dを求め、このI_<dtff>のt_d依存性I_<dtff>(t_d)を求めるものであった。ところが、光の強度に変調を加える手法では、光強度が増加する際に探針が熱膨張し、変位電流の問題や、トンネルギャップを越えて、試料と接触する可能性があるため高輝度のレーザを用いることができない。今回我々の考案した装置は、光の強度でなく、2パルス間の時間間隔に周期的な微少変調△t_dを加え、これに同期した信号を位相敏感検出することで、光強度が非常に大きいときでも安定にトンネル電流が測定できるよう工夫されている。
