Research Abstract |
1. Results of fundamental research on ovariectomized rat mandible Estrogen deficiency caused osteoporotic changes of trabecular bone and thin alveolar bone proper in rat alveolar bone. Clinically, we must pay more attention to the state of periodontal disease and postmenopausal osteoporosis in elderly women. The loss of occlusion caused by the extrusion of the antagonistic tooth resulted in an increase of its alveolar bone height. However, the bone volume of the internal alveolar area was significantly lower. In addition, it was demonstrated that estrogen deficiency caused severe internal bone loss and weakened trabecular bone structures on the alveolar bone that lost mechanical loading with the antagonistic tooth, although it did not affect alveolar bone height. 2. Results of fundamental research on ovariectomized monkey mandible The ovariectomized monkey mandibles showed porotic changes in the cortical and trabecular bone. Mandibular cortex data in particular correlated closely with lumbar porosis. The subject whose lumbar bone mineral density was lowest showed the lowest mandibular BMD and had porous mandibular and radial cortices. Therefore, information on the mandibular cortical bone seems useful in screening severe osteoporosis patients. 3. Trials of measuring the BMD of human mandible We succeeded to measure the BMD of human mandible, however, the BMD values were easily changed by only small gap of measuring surface. Further improvement is necessary to resolve the problems.
