Research Abstract |
This study aims at a general survey of the modern Tohoku dialects paying special attention to geographical and generational dynamics. The technique of "glottogram" (age-area graph), visualizing age differences of a linear area on a sheet of paper, is the most appropriate method to study the linguistic change in progress. This technique has been applied in the most part of Japan, except the northern part. On the basis of the present joint study of Tohoku and Hokkaido areas, the patterns of dialectal diffusion of the whole Japan were made clear. 'A11 the acquired data were put into computer, and more than 300 graphs showing 229 informants of 69 localities were made public. All the raw data and related materials will be made public later in the form of CD-ROM.
