Research Abstract |
(a) In cooperation with Advanced Technology Research Laboratories (Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd.), we put an experimental system of natural language translation (Hindi, Turkish, German, Thai) on display at Osaka Sankangaku Joint Fair (January, 2001). On the input of a natural Japanese human voice, the character-based translation of -a respective language is outputted. (b) An original dialog collection for overseas travelers is editted in Japanese and English for which Asian language versions are made (Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, Burmese, Hindi). Recorded sound data have been, processed (Chinese only, others still under work). With these data, a browser-based application (XML + Java Script) and a server-side application over networks have been programed. (c) Lexicons of Chinese and Thai have been compiled on the base of frequency check up to 5000 words in Japanese. Sound data for corresponding Chinese have been recorded and the processing of digitalizing them is under work. To check the accuracy and effectivity of the translations, the two lexicons have been printed. Translation works in other languages are also under way. (d) Research results concerning multilingual capacities in OS s have been reported on the Internet HP. Our team demonstrated how to utilize multilingual (unicode/ utf-8) data for Network searching (FreeBSD + PostgreSQL) and developed an application to offer these utf-8 data for mobile i-mode. Internet users. Multilingual data mentioned here as well as experimental programs have been recorded in CD-ROM format for future joint development.
