Research Abstract

We investigated the pathology of idiopathic macular hole. We obtained the results that apoptotic effect of retinal glial cells in foveal region is related with pathology of this disease in addition to mechanical effect of vitreoretinal traction. In the vitreous cavity of the patients with macular hole the activity of chymase and trptase increase. Chyamase, one of the serine-proteases, has apoptotic effect for undifferential cells. We observed the apoptotic effect by chymase using cultured retinal glial cells with basic FGF and the inhibitional effects for cell proliferation. We also observed the apoptotic cells around the foveal region after injection of chymase into the vitreous cavity in monkey eyes. We speculated that the retinal glial cells in foveal region have the stem cell-like property and there is some possibility that new medical therapy will be available for macular hole in the future.
