Research Abstract

We tried to develop an algal system for simultaneous removal of CO_2 and NOx in flue gas. It is important to recycle carbon dioxide and we investigated the development of an effective technique to recycle algal biomass produced in this CO_2/NOx treatment system. This technique was applied to use cyanobacterial biomass collected from eutrophic lakes. It was shown that algal and cyanobacterial biomass could be used to produce hydrogen gas or biosorbent for heavy metals.
1. Analysis of algal biomass.
The component of algal biomass was analyzed to optimize the utilization method.
2. Hydrogen production from algal biomass.
Hydrogen was produced by photosynthetic bacterium, Rhodobium marinum A-501, from lactic acid, which was produced by Lactobacillus amylovorus from starch contained in algal biomass. Furthermore, it was possible to produce hydrogen directly from algal biomass using mixed culture or R. marinum A-501 and L. amylovorus.
3. Heavy metal removal from environmental water by microalgae.
In environmental water, Ca and Mg ions are contained at high level. Heavy metals, such as Zn, Cd, Cu, and Pd were found to be removed in the presence of Ca or Mg ion.
