Research Abstract |
In the Western thought, a theory of intellect concerns exclusively about divine intellect in the ancient Greek period. But in modern times, only human intellect becomes an object of the theory. What caused this transition? To answer the question, we must take into account the role of a theological thinking of Christians, especially that of Western medieval thinkers. Through the research activities, three points were made clear as a result of the study of an original theory on the human intellect in the Western thought. (1) In the theory of an immanent active intellect of Thomas Aquinas should be mentioned as an original theory on the human intellect. (2) There appeared different understandings about Christianity since the age of the Crusade in the twelfth and thirteenth century. One of which did miss the original theory. (3) Possibility of Religious pluralism could be admitted according to the original theory of the human intellect in the Western medieval period, but it had been lost afterwards according to a different understanding of Christianity and the human intellect. Besides, considering an intellectual effort of Medieval Christian scholars to demonstrate the existence of "intellectus separatus", intellectual substances, it is certain that brain science is not the only way of treating the so-called mind-body problem.
