Research Abstract |
This research project A basic research on Buddhist terminology in Sanskrit, Tibetan, Mongolian and Chinese based on Mahavyutpatti aims to collect basic material for Sanskrit, Tibetan and Mongolian studies. In 9th century Mahavyutpatti was compiled by many translators and scholars in Tibet and contains about.9500 words or phrases in Sanskrit and Tibetan. It is a most basic and comprehensive word list of Buddhism at that time. Later, perhaps in 17th or 18th century, Mongolian equivalents and Chinese translations were appended to each items. The investigators of this research project have published the critical edition of Mahavyutpatti of Sanskrit, Tibetan and Mongolian version 10 years before. But since then many new materials and researches have been published. So they plan to revise the old publication and make a new critical edition of that text. This research project is a basic preliminary research for this new critical edition. The investigators inputted newly published or found Tibetan editions, input four Sanskrit edition, made a database of these materials and compiled a Mongolian and Tibetan word to word index. Especially, this Mongolian-Tibetan index is a very useful tool for scholars using Mongolian language. It was published in the Report of this research project. The investigators are planning to make a new critical edition of Mahavyutpatti in a few years.
