Research Abstract |
The result of this research is as follows: 1 I made a collation of the four manuscripts of John Locke's Essay concerning Toleration, which shows differences among the four manuscripts. 2 I revised the Japanese translation of Essay which had been published on the University bulletin (Hiroshima Law Journal) last year. 3 I made a new Japanese edition of Essay which enables Japanese scholars easily to compare it with the English collation. 4 The English collation and the new Japanese edition provide us with documentary evidence for comparison with Locke's Letter concerning Toleration. 5 I made a research paper about documentary features of the four manuscripts of Essay. 6 This research paper reveals the process of writing Essay, the differences of the four manuscripts, and the development of Locke's ideas of toleration. 7 I made a report booklet (which should be submitted with this abstract) which contains the English collation, the Japanese text, and the research paper. 8 I sent this report booklet to overseas and Japanese researcher to seek their review and advice. 9 The co-investigator, Prof. Nishitani tried to make a CD containing the original pictures of the four manuscripts, the English collation, the Japanese text, the research paper and the program of reference.
