Research Abstract |
The present study sheds light on the characteristics of Japanese older adults from the viewpoints of the independent/interdependent self-construal, self-esteem, perceived competence, gender identity, and self-narrative. Questionnaire survey and extensive interview revealed that the self-recognition of the Japanese older adults are far more positive than that of the young and middle-aged adults, in spite of their rather declined health and physical conditions. It is suggested that the older adults' positive and active self-concept are suitable for the recent aging society of Japan on the one hand, and that Japanese older adults are not preparing for closing their life on the other hand.
