Research Abstract

Results of research study in 2000-2002 are following :
(1) Eisa in Okinawa preserves the characteristics of the primary events of the year during days of the old Bon festival.
Yet, that has been intensifying the factor of 'show' in mid summer. Eisa association of young men and women throughout cities in Okinawa is introducing famous folk song and pop music, most of all are played under Ryukyu scale and Uchinanchu (Okinawan language). 'Ryukyu matsuri taiko' introduces new Okinawan pop music, 'Eisa-dan-Mafekaji' makes music with sanshin (shamisen), fue (flute), taiko (drum) instruments and folk song. So, they take a bipolar mode. On the other hand, people in northern district and in Motobu peninsula are persisting in Te-odori Eisa as old Bon festival.
(2) Awa-odori (Awa dance) in Tokushima city is producing new teams and new expressional factors, so that is strengthen 'show' factor on modern city.
Awa-odori keeps developing geared to 'Yoshikono' (melody and the text) and 'Yoshino-gawa' (Yoshino river melody). On the other hand, old Awa-odori as 'Fugai nagashi' and 'Hana-muso' are experiencing a revival in popularity, now. Transmission and propagation of tradition develop the festival history over four centuries.
(3) The music of Yosakoi-matsuri in Kochi city is based on a folk song, 'Yosakoi-bushi'.
And this song having been arranged in a various styles, is under a new development. This song recreates new music of modern feeling by deformation and arrangement. Moreover Yosakoi festival uses the original 'Yosakoi-bushi' and a new folk song 'Yosakoi-naruko-odori' composed by Eisaku Takemasa. They produce festivals by blending various genres, regional localities and all the ages, together.
It is concluded that these festivals make spiral development in tradition and creation by positive propagation and recreations throughout Japan.
