Research Abstract |
The purpose of the project was to analyze how the English language, as a "universally used language", is used by various kinds of media through which the British and the U.S. influence the other parts of the world in the late 20^<th> century to the present. In the past, the British Empire held sway over its colonies ; how does the British try to appeal its power in the present world using such media as BBC world or ELTEC? How do media in the U.S., the only super-power in the present world, convey and represent the events, especially such historical events as "September, 11" and "war in Iraq"? Unlike the studies which try to see how the language, media and the events are related to each other from the sociological or journalistic point of view, the present project tries to discuss the problem from the humanities point of view, mainly using the methodology of literary studies. Through the research and analyzes of the writings of such scholars as Peter Trudgill and David Crystal, Saito shows the difficulty and the problem of adapting English as a "universal language." Analyzing Hayden White and Jannet Stagner's discussion of "JFK", Noan Chomsky and Susan Sontag's comment on "September,11", and journalistic writing on the "war in Iraq," Hayashi shows how the fiction and history intermingle to each other in a complicated way in the present world.
