Research Abstract |
It is the "one-country two systems" concept which China invented in order to solve the problem of national unification with a peaceful means in stead of using military forces It is applied to Hong Kong and Macau which were the British and Portuguese colonies respectively. These two areas are unified into China in an amicable way, and became the "special administrative region" in China. Although Hong Kong and Macao have enjoyed "high degree of autonomy", under the control of China where democratization is not attained, social stability was emphasized and development of democratization has received restriction by China. On the other hand, Taiwan, which is China's last objective of unification, has attained democratization to the extent that the president can be elected by a direct election. It is very difficult for Taiwan to accept "one country and two systems" which China proposes. Conversely, the Taiwanese identity is deepening quickly rather than Chinese. In this research, we showed the limit of the "one country, two systems" concept for national unification, and the democratization and fundamental human rights would become more important as conditions for national unification.
