Research Abstract

Aerostatic bearings or externally pressurized air bearings can be used today for many applications, even in high load conditions, due to the establishment of good design principles, the improvement of machining accuracy, and the development of various types of restrictors and compensation methods. For example, the development of groove compensation restrictors, which are shallow grooves machined on the bearing surface to act as restrictors, has led a considerable increase in the stiffness in terms of parallel movement. However the inclination or tilt stiffness is still considered to be low and remains to be studied in depth.
The objective of this study is to clarify analytically and experimentally the effects of bearing surface geometriei, i.e., bearing clearance profiles on the inclination stiffness of annular thrust bearings with annular orifices. These are drilled directly into the bearing surface and also called plain orifices or inherently compensated restrictors. The objective is then to. suggest a desirable clearance profile contributing to higher stiffness without adding any costly compensators.
Guidelines are presented to improve the tilt stiffness by modification of the bearing clearance profile, and a desirable profile is proposed.
