Research Abstract

In this study, we have been scientifically investigating various optimum growing conditions for mushrooms, such as the culture medium, temperature, humidity, and lighting conditions. We have also precisely measured bio-electric potential signals, which are closely related to mushroom growth activation, in order to study the bio-electric potential reactions to various light stimulus conditions, such as wavelength, luminance and irradiation method, as well as the relationship between light stimuli and morpho genetic properties.
We have completed the basic design of a new type of light source equipment to control growth conditions. Our study revealed that fruit body growth and fungal thread in the culture medium are closely related, so we studied the growth stages of the fungal thread and the culture medium states using MRI equipment. The following results were obtained:
1. Automated accurate measurement system for measuring bio-electric potential We have designed a device for weather contr … More ol that can artificially set the atmospheric conditions and we have completed an accurate automatic system for measuring bio-electric potentials with high accuracy induced by light stimuli.
2 Production of a prototype light source panel We specified the center wavelength as that which is effective for accelerating growth; with this wavelength, we developed a light source using an ultra-luminescence LED panel that can be used at the farm site. Further, we developed effectively control the light source, adding a 1/f fluctuation to the stimulating light. It was revealed that adding fluctuated light to the light stimuli is effective in accelerating mushroom growth.
3. Application of the growth control light source panel for use at a farm site The prototype growth chamber has been further improved and a comparative morphological study was done by adding various types of light stimuli. At the same time, sensing of the bio-electric potential was conducted and physical checks on the mushrooms were also performed. The implication is that the growth can be established by observation of the pattern of fluctuations in the bio-electric potential.
4. Observation of fungal thread growth inside the culture medium We have used a MRI instrument to non-destructively and non-invasively photograph over a period of time, the process of fungal thread growth from its initial stage in the culture medium through to the development of the primordium.
