Research Abstract |
Purpose : The purpose of this study was to estimate the minimum requirement of sodium intake among Japanese adults on the basis of a sodium balance study. Methods : The study subjects were 10 healthy young adult men who gave a written informed consent. The balance study was conducted during a consecutive 42 days period in November through December in 2000 and 2001. At the beginning of the study period, the subjects ate meals freely for 3 days. During the subsequent 42 days, they were asked to eat the specially prepared foods, which contained all known necessary nutrients and met the Japanese recommended dietary allowances except for sodium, so that the their salt intake would decrease gradually in the following order: 10 g/day for 3 days, 6 g/day for 11 days, 5 g/day for 14 days, and 4 g/day for 14 days. Everyday during the study period, the subjects consumed distilled water freely ; their urine was collected ; their body weight was measured ; and their subjective symptoms were recorded. Sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium in the experimental food, urine, stools, and sweat were assayed by atomic absorption spectrometry. The concentrations of plasma aldosterone and antidiuretic hormone were measured twice weekly, and various clinical tests also were done. Results : The sodium balance was negative or zero when the subjects took salt 6 grams or more a day, while that was positive when they took salt approximately 4 grams a day. Conclusions : On the basis of the sodium balance and other results, it seemed that the minimum requirement of sodium for adults was approximately 70 mmol (4 grams of sodium chloride) per day in terms of safety.
