Research Abstract |
We investigated the effects of arachidonic acid on urological tumors. 1. Cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 plays an important role in tumor cell proliferation, resistant to apoptosis, angiogenesis, and invasion in various malignant tumors. Of 131sections of renal cell carcinoma (RCC), 70(53.4%) were positive for COX-2 expression. COX-2 expression was correlated with Ki-67 labeling index, microvessel density, and MMP-2 expression. 2. RCC with sarcomatoid component which has a highly malignant biological behavior. We evaluated 19 sections with sarcomatoid and non-sarcomatoid component. In regard to sarcomatoid component, 15 (78.9%) were positive for COX-2, which showed diffuse staining of tumor cell cytoplasm. In contrast, in regard to non-sarcomatoid component, 8 (42.1%) were positive for COX-2. COX-2 expression was significantly increased in sarcomatoid component compared with non-sarcomatoid component (P=0.02).
