Research Abstract

We have developed a model of human ear that can be formed in a tissue engineering manner by seeding chondrocytes onto the 3D polymer which has a shape of human ear.
The polymer scaffolds supported : growth of chondrocytes after the models were implanted in athymic nude mice. The constructs in vivo developed through vascularization, formed new cartilage with characteristic gene expression and protein synthesis, and maintained the shape of human ear. As additional studies proceed, this approach will clinically become important.
