Research Abstract

To improve the water sorption of PMMA, new hydrophobic monomers, such as norbonyl and phenyl methacrylate, were studied. Water sorption of the copolymers of the hydrophobic monomers and MMA decreased with in the concentration of the monomers. Various mechanical properties were increased higher than PMMA. The degree of dispersion of the hydrophobic monomer, such as 2, 2-bis[4-(2-hydroxy-3-methacryloyloxypropoxyphenyl)propane (Bis-GMA), into a medium was analyzed by HPLC. The concentration of Bis-GMA in upper part of the medium was high rather than that of lower part, and the fact showed no proper cytotoxic effect. Three dispersion mediums and two dispersing agents, to disperse the hydrophobic monomer for cytotoxic test were estimated. Those dispersion mediums studied showed no a satisfactory. The dispersing agents were not effective as a dispersing gent and had toxicity at low concentration.
