Research Abstract

Stearic acids. with fluorine atoms near the carboxyl group, at the other end of carbon chain, and between them were synthesized. The yields of derivatization of these carboxylic acids to phosphatidyl cholines were low. Some preliminary investigations of relaxation times on ^<19>F-NMR of liposomes containing these phosphatidyl cholines gave the following results : The relaxation time of fluorine atoms of liposome containing fluorine near the carboxyl group was much shorter than that containing fluorine on the terminal position. This result suggests that the outer part of the liposome is more rigid than the inner part. In other words, the inner part is more flexible than the outer part. When vitamin E was added to these liposomes, the relaxation times of these fluorines became much shorter. Interestingly, the ratio of decrease was larger for the terminal fluorine atoms than that of fluorine atoms near the carboxyl group. Namely, vitamin E increases the rigidity of the membrane : vitamin E strengthens the biological membranes mechanically. This might be one of the biological effects of vitamin E.
Now, improvement of the yields on derivatization of the carboxylic acids to the phosphatidyl cholines are going on, and more detailed results will be obtained near future.
