Research Abstract |
The purpose of the study was to establish a school-based system for health promotion in childrdn. Boys and girls in elementary schools (1177) and junior high schools (1064) joined the study. The following items were assessed: (1) body height and weight, and body composition, (2) biochemical and hormonal markers, (3) life style-related factors such as foods and exercise, etc. For assessment of obesity, percentage of overweight for the standard was shown more reliable than BMI (body mass index) especially in childhood. There were significant regional differences in serum lipid levels, suggesting that in addition to genetic causes intervention and education seemed effective to improve dyslipidemia in children. Fat-derived hormone, leptin, was significantly related with body weight and the degree of overweight. Leptin was demonstrated as one of the indicators for fatness even in children. There were gender differences in eating behavior and favorite foods already in childhood. Follow-up study demonstrated efficacy of the health promotion activity in the study. The school-based system for prevention of life style-related diseases is suggested effective for boys and girls in the elementary schoolas well as junior high school.
