Research Abstract |
Purpose: We investigated the skills used by independent midwives in Fukushima prefecture, in order to understand the skills needed by future midwives in the area. Materials and methods: The questionnaire survey was carried out for women who worked as midwives in Fukushima and were born in Meiji or Taisho era. The answers were recorded on tapes and the tapes were summarized as reports. We recorded on VTR the technique of six midwives using a dummy. Results: The ages of the surveyed targets were from 74 to 94 years old (mean age 82.3). The targets were from each of the three different culture areas of Fukushima. The ages when starting in business were from 21 to 40 years old (mean age 27.6) and they had worked from 26 to 65 years (mean 44.6) as nurses after starting business. The techniques that should be handed on are the following: 1) Continuous care of pregnant women individually during pregnancy and understanding each woman's character well. 2) Assistance so that pregnancy and delivery may be performed normally. The spontaneous cure capability which human being has is employed efficiently. 3) Abnormalities are predicted and it is coped with. 4) Correspondence that suited each character is carried out.
