Research Abstract

The pourpose of this study is to clarify the status of communication between frail elderly and such carers as nurses, caregivers it al in geriatric facilities. Investigated were the amount and variety of carer address to the elderly and their responses. The relationships of elderly attributes to the above were also examined.
The subjects were 35 elderly who ranged from 71 to 99 years of age. Verbatim records were made on a one-day basis of every conversation between the carer and elderly and categolized. The amounts of all conversation time were also caliculated. Statistical analysis was applied to all of the results.
The resuls were as follows : 1. The variety of address was categolized into "talking for the fulfillment of everyday life", and "talking for the activation of life" The amounts were 75.9% and 24.1% respectively. 2. The responses from elderly were not voluntary, and almost were only replies to the utterances of the carer and were short. 3. The amount of talking to dementia-afflicted and bed-ridden elderly was significantly higher than that directed to non-dementia and wheelchair elderly suggestiong that the carer seemed to deliberately address the former. 4. Understandably, the frequency of the responses by the elderly who had speech impediments was significantly lower than that of those who did not. The frequency of responses when talking for the activation of life was higher for the elderly afficted with dementia and for those confined to wheel-chairs.
