Research Abstract |
Skin fold thickness, hydrodensitometric weighing and body mass index (BMI) have become available for determination for the human body composition. Recently, the relevance to intra-abdominal visceral fat was reported as a risk factor for coronary artery sclerosis, insulin resistance. It was able to have many interests on the obesity and visceral fat to prevent of lifestyle-related disease. However, there is no method except for the computed tomography method (CT) for evaluating visceral fat area. New instruments using a tetrapolar multi-frequency bioelectric impedance have been developed from 5 kHz to 1 MHz could possibly distinguish between extra and intra-cellular resistance. The purpose of this study was to develop convenient and useful equations for of visceral fat area by multi-frequency bioelectric impedance, circumferences of body segment and skinfold thickness. Abdominal CT scan image was obtained at the level of umbilicus. The subjects were 82 persons (male : 51, female : 31) aged 18 to 69 years. The average BMI were 22.58 kg/m^2 for male, 21.1158 kg/m^2 for female. The average visceral fat area determined by CT were 46.2 cm^2 for male and 34.2 cm^2 for female. Multiple regression equation developed in this study for estimating visceral fat area was 2.973^*BMI + 1.151^*age + 1.006^*hip + 0.727^*wait + 0.538^*Ri of abdomen - 216.075. The correlation between visceral fat area by abdominal CT at the umbilicus level and estimating visceral fat area was 0.895 (p<0.01). These findings suggest that the equation may be useful for assessment of applicable to a visceral fat area.
