Research Abstract |
There are pressing concerns about safety, labeling and the environmental risks entailed in the wide commercial use of genetically modified (GM) crops. On my project in 2000, I conducted an awareness survey of GM foods on 370 high-school teachers of home economic subject with graduated student. The survey showed that their awareness for GM foods is extremely high, especially where safety and labeling are concerned. We also investigated the possible contamination levels of GM soybeans (soybeans resistant to herbicides) among several tofu makers, by screening dead soybeans after herbicide spraying. GM soybeans seem to be blended at rates of 25-95% for four of five tofu makers. On the next project in 2001, I examined the commercial kit to be available for the detection of GM soya. I used a kit (Strategic Diagnostic Inc., USA) which was used the antibody against CP4EPSPS, the product of GM soya of the resistance against herbicide. As a result , the kit was valuable as far as the row leaf and seed of soya was tested. But, the antigenisity of GM soya was destroyed after the heating of soya milk, therefore a commercial tofu was not available for materials of the detection of GM soya. It is necessary to develop another polyclonal antibody against purified CP4EPSPS. I examined the isolation of protein of the defatted leaf and seed of soya on SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and detected the specific band corresponding to 46kDa protein from soya leaf not soya seed. I tried to separate and purify this protein, but could not purify this protein completely. Further purification of CP4EPSPS and the production of antibody should be done for the development of visible kit as a teaching materials of GM food at school.
