Research Abstract |
Through the survey and study, we clarified issues such as: 1) In both areas, residents have limited access to nation-wide media as cost for communication is expensive in comparison with other areas while local CATVs became prevalent and the residents have preference for local area information. 2) Miyako Island is outpacing Ishigaki Island much as for IT systematization. It is one of the reasons for the difference that local IT systematization in Ishigaki Island has been driven by the local government whereas collaboration between the government and citizens (MTV) has been successful to proceed IT systematization in Miyako Island. 3) The residents in both areas are showing appreciation of their lives in Okinawa, especially their hometown, Ishigaki and Miyako. This tendency is remarkable in old ages. Many of the residents are thinking of themselves having heterogeneous opinion with the mainlander. Many of the people younger than 29 are hoping to live in other places. 4) The residents in both

areas are pointing out that the main reason for CATV subscription is to watch local area information channels. This can be one of the significant function for a CATV in an area where there are many residents showing adherents to the area. 5) The CATV's subscribers are in favor with the CATVs providing opportunities to know each other, what other local residents are thinking, and gathering local residents' interest in their neighbors. Those functions of local information channels are significant for the residents. 6) Enhancement of service line-up in Miyako television (MTV) is going far beyond that of Ishigaki cable television (ICT). Residents in Miyako Island are regarding MTV's contribution to improvement of their daily lives more than residents in Ishigaki for ICT. 7) Subscription to CATVs has brought increase of TV watch time and also had impact on the daily life. By obtaining information of local events, residents are visiting sites around their houses more frequently than before. 8) Internet users are few in either Miyako Island or Ishigaki Island. Up to 13% or 15% residents of Miyako Island and Ishigaki Island are using internet. Main use of internet by them are browsing homepages, sending and receiving e-mail. Less
