Research Abstract |
The Construction of a Visual Foundation for Historical and Geographical Information of Heian and Kyoto, through application of the technique of distribution. The purpose of this project is to capture the historical changes of Kyoto-city in a three dimensional structure. In order for this to take shape, the formation of three groups(Space/Time-, Nature/People- and the System Group) is being promoted. The Time/Space Group bears fruit, firstly in the form of the perfection of the database of antique maps of Kyoto ranging from the Heian Period to the Modern Period. The number of data in this database amounts to 1600. It's bibliographical information and research results are being made public on the homepage. Secondly, the discovery of the "Koan Mori Maps", that resemble the concept of this project closely. They were discovered during the process of researching Kyoto's antique maps. The positive outcome of the Nature/People Group is in the integration of information from each period. As for information about customs and manners, this has been found in Rakuchurakugaibyobu folding screens, that depict life in and around Kyoto, as the ones in possession of Kozu and Funaki. As for individual information about people, a link has been established with the "Heianjinbutsushi". Then, by projecting this information on the antique maps of Kyoto or Heian, that have been produced within the Time/Space Group, one will discover it may greatly enhance the possibility of deciphering certain data. As a result of the System Group, the protocol of GLOBALBASE has been improved (techniques on connecting geographical changes with the concerning Nature/People information, according to their distributed environments). Also improvements have been made to make it easier to use. For instance, now maps of the Edo Period and of the Modern Period can be projected on the antique maps of Kyoto, that are based on hand drawn maps of Heian-Kyoto as well as on excavation data.
