Research Abstract

The earthquake of Mj 7.3 occurred in the western part of Tottori prefecture on October 6, 2000. Strong seismic intensity of 6 was recorded in the source area. More than 100 peoples were injured, though no one was killed by the earthquake of such large magnitude. The moment magnitude of this earthquake is 6.6 and a little less than 6.9 of the 1995 Hyogoken-nanbu earthquake of 6.9. There was big difference of disaster between the two events. No active faults had been pointed out and small strain had been observed from the GOS-surveys in the source area. In addition, swarm earthquakes occurred several times from 1989 in the southern half og the source area.
In this study, the aftershocks of the earthquake were examined in detail as well as the field surveys on active faults and land surface deformation. Surveys for the collapsed buildings ware also carried out.
Before the earthquuake there were some seismic activities on the border area of Tottori-Shimane prefecture, and also in the source area. Most of these swarm earthquakes were found to be distributed on the low slip portion of the main shock. besides four low-frequency earthquakes occurred at depth of about 30 km were observed since October 1997.
Aftershock distribution was obtained from the routine network and the urgent temporary observations. On the south part, aftershocks are concentrated in a narrow zone, but they are broaden in the northern part of the aftershock area. The strong motion record show as large acceleration as 0.8g but no severe damage of buildings except for those on the sea side. Some Buildings were broken by liquefaction on the Yonago port. There were some land slides in the mountainous region but no severe damage were caused by them.
