Research Abstract |
Progesterone and estrogen receptor (PR and ER) expressions were examined immunohistochemically in female rats exposed to andogen and bisphenol-A (BPA) to evaluate effect of endocrine disrupter on female reproductive function. PR and ER expressions following a series of hormonal regime after ovariectomy as adults were affected in persistent estrous rats given andogen neonatally. Changes in expressions of EGF, TGF-α and EGF receptor (EGF-R) in the endometrial cells after the treatment were less evident compared with those in the PR and ER expressions. Adult rats given BPA for 7 day from the day of bith showed regular estrous cycles on day 60 and their ovaries contained follicles and corpora lutea. In BPA-treated rats, however, the ovaries were significantly smaller than in the controls. The uteri were markedly heavier in these BPA-treated rats than in the controls. Uterine response to the ovarian hormones was essentially the same between BPA-treated and control rats. These findings indicate that steroid hormone receptor is a potent marker for evaluation of endocrine disruptor in female reproduction, and that neonatal exposure of the female rat to BPA has some effects on both the central nervous system controlling female reproduction and peripheral organs.
