高解像度赤外線偏光観測による前主系列星及び原始星の星周構造の解明

Research Abstract

本研究では、南アフリカにあるIRSF望遠鏡とSIRPOL観測装置を用いて、星形成領域の近赤外(1-2.5μmの3波長帯)偏光観測サーベイを継続し、より数多くの固有偏光天体候補を選び出すことで、若い星の星周構造に迫った。
本研究の初期成果として、「猫の手星雲」(NGC 6334)と呼ばれる星・惑星形成領域を赤外線で観測し、22%という高い円偏光を検出することに成功した。これは、これまでに報告されたなかで最大の赤外線円偏光である。さらに、観測だけでなく、3次元モンテカルロ・シミュレーションを行うことで、観測で検出されたような大きい円偏光度(22%)の形成メカニズムを明らかにしたことがあり、これは、中心星から人工的に光子を放出させ、その光と周囲の構造中のダストと相互作用(散乱過程)を計算したものである。この研究の拡張として、さらに、世界で初めて系統的に星・惑星形成領域の円偏光を観測し、同様の円偏光を合計9つの星・惑星形成領域において検出した。観測では、若くて重い星のまわりに広がる放射星雲の材料である塵粒子が、中心星からの赤外線を散乱した光をとらえた。この観測的研究の推進により「星・惑星の誕生領域の赤外線のかたよりの普遍性と生命のホモキラリティー」というタイトルで国立天文台プレスリリースを行った。その結果、読売・赤旗・マイナビ(日本)・SPACE. COM・Forbes. com. (米国)・Science Dailey(米国)・Fossile Web(中国)などに紹介された。ニュートン、O plus Eなどの雑誌にも研究成果が紹介された。さらに観測だけでなく、直線偏光観測しかできない既存の偏光器に円偏光機能を持たせる開発および円偏光データ解析手法などの検討を進めてきた。これらの進捗は当初計画以上に進展している。
一方、より高解像度の赤外線偏光観測から、前主系列星及び原始星の星周構造を解明することを目指しているため、すばる望遠鏡を用いた太陽系外惑星円盤の直接撮像・偏光観測も継続して進めた。
