Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本年度は，昨年度に引き続き，「死の顕現化に伴う脳内処理過程と随伴的防衛反応の検討」に関する機能的核磁気共鳴画像法（functional magnetic resonance imaging: fMRI）を用いた実験に取り組んだ。特に，死の不安の処理に関わる脳活動や防衛反応（e.g., 快情動刺激の感受性の増加，他者への攻撃性の増加）のトリガーとなり得る脳活動，それらを調整する個人差要因の検討を実施した。研究成果としては以下の２点が挙げられる。
１. 死関連刺激の処理に関わる脳活動を検討した結果，右前頭葉腹外側部（right ventrolateral prefrontal cortex: rVLPFC）の活動が高いことが確認された。また，個人差要因として特性自尊感情に着目して検討した結果，特性自尊感情の低い人は死関連刺激の処理時に扁桃体（amygdala）の活動が高いことが確認された。加えて，死関連刺激の処理時のrVLPFC-amygdalaの脳領域間の機能的結合が自尊感情の高い者で強いことが示された。
２. 死関連刺激の処理に関わる脳領域の検討を実施した後に，それらの脳活動が防衛反応指標を予測するかどうか検討した。その結果，死関連刺激処理時にLeft amygdalaの活動が高い者は，快情動刺激の感受性の増加や自国の文化を否定された時の過度な攻撃反応を示した。一方で，rVLPFCの活動が高い者は，そのような防衛反応を示す傾向が低かった。加えて，死関連刺激の処理時にrVLPFC-amygdalaの脳領域間の機能的結合が強い者は，防衛反応を示す程度が低かった。
死の不安と防衛反応の関連を扱った研究の多くは，社会心理学の領域で進められてきたことから，本研究のような脳機能画像法を取り入れた研究は少ない。そのため，認知・神経科学的アプローチを取り入れた本研究の成果は，先行研究に新たな視点・解釈を与えうる点において非常に有意義であるといえる。
