Research Abstract

本研究の目的は、高温高間隙水圧条件下で蛇紋岩の変形実験を行い、沈み込み帯で起こっているスロー地震発生機構を物質科学的側面から解明することである。昨年度において研究の目標はおおむね達成し、本年度は昨年度の研究結果を学術論文として投稿した。さらに、比較検証のため、沈み込み帯に存在すると考えられる塩基性片岩の高温高圧三軸変形実験をアメリカのブラウン大学におもむき行った。
塩基性片岩の力学特性を調べるために、Griggs型高温高圧変形試験機を用いて温度300-650℃、封圧750-1.5、変形速度0.001-1㎛/sの範囲で変形実験を行った。実験試料には四国三波川変成岩帯産の玄武岩を原岩とする変成度の異なる(鉱物組み合わせ、特に角閃石の組成が異なる)二つの塩基性片岩、低変成度のgreenschistと高変成度のepidote amphibole schistを用いた。どちらの試料とも封圧1GPa、温度400℃の変成相の安定条件下において延性的な挙動を示した。しかし、封圧を変化させると勇断応力は増加し、そのstress exponentは非常に高い(n~30)ことから変形メカニズムはsemibrittleであるとわかった。一方、封圧1GPa、温度500℃の変成相の境界付近において力学挙動自体はsemibrittleであり延性的な挙動ではあるが変形が集中し、摩擦(破壊)すべりがおこった。このことは、変形メカニズムがsemibrittleでも海洋地殻が沈み込み、累進変成作用を受けている間は弱面(プレートからはがれやすい面)をつくり、摩擦すべりをおこすのに対して、海洋地殻がプレートからはがれて大陸側に付加し、上昇する過程(安定条件下)では変形が集中せず塊状として振る舞う可能性があることが分かった。また、塩基性片岩中にできた弱面は安定滑りを示すので地震を引き起こすことはできないが、他の場所(例えば蛇紋岩中)で発生した破壊すべりを減速し、スロー地震発生領域を広げている可能性がある。
