| Research Abstract |
The formation of regions not only depends on economical or geographical factors, but also on events like the arrival of new groups of human beings or on the development of a consciousness, as in the case of migrants that recreate their homeland from abroad. We can say, for example, that the idea of the EU as a unitary-integrated region is related to the people's freedom to move and live inside there as much as to their experience of difference that emerges from being in contact with people coming from the outside. The same could be said about the formation of "regions" in the realm of the nation state.
Taking the Iberian Peninsula as its main object, this research aims to develop a historical analysis of the relation between the "movement of people" and the formation of "region".
During the first stage, the research was centered on the movement of people (encompassing the Atlantic Ocean, that is) between the Iberian Peninsula and the Americas. This was the vase for our common research and specifically dealt with themes like statistic analysis of migration, formation of regional consciousness or the status of immigrants in the host society. After that, the inquiry was historically broaden to pre-modern periods and geographically extended further the Pyrenees to include the movement between the Iberian Peninsula and other European regions, discussing a wide range of topics like changes in religious consciousness and linguistic transformation. We also considered how the experience of a forced displacement like "exile" influenced changes in the idea of belonging. Finally, in order to refine the methodological analysis of our regional research, we introduced, from a comparative perspective, the movement of people in Asia.
