Research Abstract

This project aimed to examine the utility and potential performance, as gas absorbers or direct gas-liquid contact heat exchangers, of "wetted-wire columns", a novel type of gas-liquid contact devices each equipped with a bundle of built-in vertically-oriented wires. Such a wetted-wire column allows a liquid absorbent to flow down each wire, being in contact with a gas mixture flowing countercurrently. The project was composed of four specific studies, which are outlined below in order.
1. The absorption of CO_2 from a CO_2/N_2 gas mixture into an aqueous monoethanolamine (MEA) solution in a "string-of-beads" flow on a single wire was studied both experimentally and theoretically, providing a fundamental understanding of the nature of chemical gas absorption with a on-wire flow of a liquid-absorbent.
2. A prototype wetted-wire column having 109 wires was constructed and tested in a series of experiments of CO_2-into-MEA-sol. absorption. The absorption performance of this column was found to be quite comparable to conventional packed-bed columns of the same size, while it imposes, on the internal gas flow, only a pressure loss smaller than that in the latter by one to two orders.
3. Then constructed was another 109-wire column equipped with a novel device for controlling the temperature of the liquid absorbent flowing on the wires. Having confirmed its successful operation, the third 109-wire column was constructed for use of a high-temperature gas approximating the flue gases in power plants. The merit of such temperature-control was recognized when the absorbent, an MEA solution, was exposed to a gas flow at temperature of 100℃ or above.
4. The air-to-silicone-oil heat transfer experiments were performed, using a 109-wire bundle installed in a closed-loop, temperature-controlled air tunnel. The obtained results indicate a practical applicability of wetted-wire columns to the operations for thermal-energy recovery from industrial waste gases.
