Research Abstract

Ozone depletion due to chemical reaction with ozone (O_3) and nitric-oxides (Nox) exhausted from an engine of supersonic aircraft is one of critical environmental issues for its accomplishment. This research is to predict the amount of ozone depletion and to assist for social assessment on the standpoint of ozone preservation in the upper atmosphere.
The major findings by this research are as follows :
1. Ground Experiment for Chemical Reaction of ozone (O_3) and nitric-oxides (Nox)
(a) The measurement procedure for ozone concentration has been established with use of FT-IR method in the space chamber of Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics, The University of Tokyo.
(b) Chemical reaction of ozone and nitric-oxides could be simulated in the space chamber.
c It was verified that, from the numerical constants for chemical reactions.
2. Numerical Simulation for Chemical Reaction of ozone (O_3) and nitric-oxides (Nox)
(a) Two-dimensional atmospheric model has been established and the effect of nitric-oxides exhausted from aircraft on ozone concentration has been predicted.
(b) The effect of nitric-oxides exhausted at the altitude of 20km on ozone concentration is small, but that at over 30km is not neglected which suggests the possibility of ozone depletion.
