Research Abstract

During the final year of this three year project, we analyzed the data from articles related to health promotion for women, health examinations in D town, and interviews of public health nurses in D town and S prefecture to clarify health needs of D town. Based on the analysis of this data, we offered health education as a health promotion program for women in D town.
1.Findings from health examination : We analyzed longitudinal health examination data of the 1,212 women who had examinations during each of the previous four years. We analyzed relationships among demographic characteristics, results of health examinations, daily health behaviors, and transitions in subjective health self-assessments. We concluded that it was necessary to develop health promotion programs designed to meet special needs associated with age and health behaviors. For middle aged women busy with their work both inside and outside of house special needs included taking appropriate amounts of sleep time and sna … More cks, and prevention of obesity and hyperlipidemia. Older women needed to take care of their daily lives and also prevent iron deficiency anemia.
2.Health education for middle aged women of D town targeted to their needs : During the waiting time before health examination, we conducted brief interventions for middle aged woman burdened by working at inside and outside her home. At the end of our session we asked questions about their health promotion behaviors : women reported they would pay more attention to health behaviors of themselves and their families.
3.Summary : health promotion for women : a)Primary prevention services for middle aged women in D town were insufficient. b)Health behaviors and health status of middle aged women were not always ideal. c)Considering that middle aged women must both anticipate achieving "healthy old age" and act as health promoters in their homes, it is necessary to offer more health promotion programs, including enlightenment programs, targeted specifically for them. d)Such health promotion programs benefit not only middle aged woman, but also their families who depend on and support them.
