Research Abstract |
The following are research results of 2002. 1) Research in museums abroad. a) Northern Europe. We studied 25 museums, art museums and so on in Copenhagen, Oslo, and Stockholm. There were not so many advanced electrical information systems for visitors. However, in the folk material room in the National Museum of Copenhagen, there was a good system which used touch-panel: First, we can look all shelves in the room. Second, we approach each shelf. Third we can look inside of each material of the shelf and get information or look pictures. In Stockholm zoo, there was a touch-panel signboard for visitors, especially for children to show where they could find the animals they wanted. It was a simple but interesting system. b) South East Asia. We studied 15 museums, science technology museums and so on in Taiwan, Thailand and Singapore. In science technology museums, there were a lot of systems using information technology although they were mainly to entertain visitors rather than to deepen the understanding of visitors. 2) Research in museums in Japan At a museum of Tokyo bayside, there was an electronic system more advanced than that of Seattle's experimental music project. Here in Japan, visitors could get information through not only sound but also moving pictures by using PDA mobile terminals. Visitors could also confirm the information they got in the museum through internet later. 3) Overall consideration to apply information technology to museum exhibitions No organization had fully satisfying explanation system by video explanation system or guide system by sound in order to deepen visitors' understanding of the exhibition using multimedia data-base contents. It is important to fulfill contents and to introduce appropriate information technology for them. It will create problems but it will lead to development of new technology.
