Research Abstract

Ferroelectrics have created considerable interest as promising storage media.
In this study an investigation for ultra high-density ferroelectric data storage based on scanning nonlinear dielectric microscopy (SNDM) was carried Out.
We performed following three investigation and obtained unexpectedly good results
1.For the purpose of obtaining the fundamental knowledge of high-density ferroelectric data storage, several experiments of nano-domain formation in lithium tantalate (LiTaO_3) single crystal and PZT thin film were conducted. As a result, very small inverted domain with radius of 6nm was successfully formed in stoichiometric LiTaG_3 (SLT).
2.Domain dot array with a density of l.5Tbit/inch^2 was formed in congruent LiTaO_3 (CLT).
3.The first prototype of high-density ferroelectric data storage system were developed. Using this system, reading and writing data transfer rates were evaluated.
1.5bit/inch^2 is the highest density reported for rewritable data storage, and is expected to stimulated renewed interest in this approach to next-generation ultrahigh-density rewritable electric data storage systems.
