Research Abstract

This research has the objective of reducing the amount of detergent in comparison with that by a commercial washing machine. The following two kinds of experiments were carried out :
10 to 30 sheets of fabric swatches well soaked in wash liquid were piled into layers on a horizontal iron plate. Arod of stainless steel (φ26mm, 710g weights) was dropped, with its end cross section downward, on the piled fabrics from the height of 30 cm. (1) The artificially soiled cotton fabrics was cleaned with the state that it became more white in the area of ring-shape which approximately corresponds to the edge of the flat bottom of the rod contacting with fabrics. That is, the washing performance of periphery of the contact area is higher than the inside. This suggests the importance of flow induced by the falling rod. (2) Difference in material of fabrics (cotton or polyester) did not affect on the removal of the soil. In conclusion, this impact pressure method is good for washing.
2. Experiment on the washing method utilizing pulsating flows.
This method consists in pulsating flows through the fabric placed between two gauges in a cylinder in order to import beneficial mechanical effects to sheets of soiled fabric such as deformation clash of the fabric against the gauges and penetration of a liquid flow through the fabric. (1) Detergency was shown by this method to be almost two times higher than that possible by a commercial washing machine. (2) By mixing air bubbles into the liquid with the ratio of 20% in volume, the performance of detergency does not decrease, which means reduction of detergent by about 20%.
