Research Abstract |
The purpose of this project was, through exhaustively studying and inventorying the hand-written and printed books in the Kyo^rin Library at Waseda University's library, to create a new catalogue of the collection, to analyze the chronology of the materials, and to identify unique characteristics of the collection. From April 2001 through March 2003 twelve investigations were conducted (amounting to roughly thirty three days) on the Kyo^rin library collection at Waseda University Library's special materials department. Moreover, for research purposes, we visited related temple libraries, such as the Eizan bunko^library, and the original location of the Kyo^rin library collection at Kannonsho^ji Tatchu^Kyo^rin-bo^in Shiga Prefecture. The investigation involved combing through about eleven hundred individual documents in the Kyo^rin library, recording their characteristics and contents by hand, and then entering the data into an Excel format. The detailed data entries included the Kyo^rin library's catalogue number, name of text, other names of text, binding, number of pages, document measurements, the date of writing or publication (Japanese dates), Western calendar dating, whether they were copied or commissioned by the monks Gonkaku or Kakujin, the names of previous owners or collections, vermilion and sumi ink seals by previous owners (some indicating the documents' categorization), prefaces and postscripts, publishing information, records of the origin of texts, and other remarks. The covers, internal titles, records of the origin of the texts, and collection seals of Japanese-style books were recorded with a digital camera.
