Research Abstract

During receiving this grant for two years, I visited Egypt twice in the first year and again twice in the second year in order to collect research materials such as newspapers and journals and discuss the subject-matter with researchers in Egypt. In Japan, besides consulting Egyptian parliamentary records housed in the Institute of Oriental Culture, the University of Tokyo, I read the materials I collected and wrote two articles. The first of the article discussed the debate about limiting the holding of large agricultural land, where I argued that the debate was wide-spread in the 1940's and the large segments of participants in the debate supported the idea of land reform. I presented a paper on this subject at the first World Congress for Middle Eastern Studies held in Mainz, Germany in September 2002. In the second article dealing with the mutual influence of ideas in the debate on poverty, I pointed out that people in different political stances were intensely influenced each other in the course of formulating their own arguments on poverty. I also made lists of newspapers and magazines published from 1920's to 1950's in Egypt held at the Egyptian National Library and the library of the American University in Cairo, as well as a list of primary sources produced in the same period held at the Egyptian National Archive. I also wrote a research plan for my next project on the views of Peasants on poverty based on the discussions with Egyptian historians and began to look for research materials.
