Research Abstract |
In this project I investigated the religion of Middle Italy (i.e. of South Etruria, Latium and North Campania) by keeping in mind the build up of Roman hegemony in this area, and by making use of the results from the archeological research being intensively carried out recently. The details and the results of my research are as follows : 1. The fundamental literary source for investigating the Roman history of the 4^<th> century B.C. is the second pentad (books 6-10) of Ab Urbe Condita of Livius. Therefore I read this work comparing with other parallel sources and tried to interprete crucial parts consulting preceding investigations. This made the foundation of my researches and the results will be also available for the translation of Livius now being in preparation. 2. Lavinium, a Latin city, was closely related with both the state cult of Rome and the common cult of the Latin confederation. Therefore I took as the main subject of the research the sanctuaries excavated in the territory

of the city, especially the so-called sancturary of 13 altars. I surveyed the history, of the excavation, studied the archeological reports of the remains, especially the altars and the heroon excavated in this sanctuary, and interpreted two epigraphies found near the altars. I also investigated the related literary sources and tried to consider the cult performed in this sanctuary from the viewpoint of the state cult of Rome and the federal cult of the Latins. The results of the research can be read in the Report of the Research. I also read a paper on this theme in the Korean-Japanese International Symposium on Ancient History of Europe, which took place in Pusan, Korea, in 2003. 3. I investigated the ideological aspect of the ruling system of the nobiles, the ruling class of the Roman Republic which emerged from the reorganization of the aristocracy in the second half of the 4^<th> Century B.C. Concretely, I treated of imagines maiorum, the ancestor masks, of which the nobiles made use, in order to justify the superiority of their families. I wrote 2 papers on this theme and published them in historical journals. Less
